Alex Cora Joins The Mets

By / January 14, 2009 / Hot Stove

The Mets have reached an agreement with infielder, Alex Cora. It is for one year, $2 million.

In 2008, as a member of the Red Sox, he hit .270 and had an on-base percentage of .371 in 75 games.

Looks like the Mets have just gotten their back-up for Luis Castillo when he goes down to the DL again.

Yes, I said when and not if.

Man, I’d love to make $2 million for one year as a backup with a .245 career batting average. I’m in the wrong line of work.

Seriously though, when Castillo does get hurt, it’ll seem like a bargain. Omar seemed set on Cora for the longest time. Then again, while perusing the list of available free agent middle infielders, no available player jumped out at me. Cora can not only fill in for Castillo when he goes on the DL, he can also give Reyes a day off here and there so he can still be fresh in September. Nice pickup.
