Cubs Make Another Trade

By / February 2, 2009 / Hot Stove

We’re almost at the point of Spring Training and the Cubs are still making serious moves.

It was reported by the Associated Press that the Chicago Cubs have agreed to trade pitcher Rich Hill to the Baltimore Orioles. It has yet to be announced who the player is the Orioles will be giving in return.

There are two plausible explanations for this trade:

  1. The Cubs are seriously making a run for Jake Peavy again.
  2. The Cubs are opening a spot up for Aaron Heilman.

More on this later.

I believe Rich Hill was out of options and the Cubs couldn’t promise him a spot in the rotation. I agree with your explanation. They’ll either get Peavy (I’ve also been reading about the Cubs showing some interest in Braden Looper) or grant Heilman his wish to be a starter. They already have four quality starters in Zambrano, Harden, Dempster and Lilly. One of the two options you present would close the door on Hill getting a spot in the rotation. Like Mark Prior, he was supposed to be the next big thing on their staff. It’s a shame he never realized his potential with the Cubs.
