Mets Continue Rebuilding Bullpen

Despite what Omar Minaya has said, the Mets have shown interest in relief pitcher, Will Ohman, reports Jerry Crasnick on ESPN.com.

Ohman was one of the relievers I was hoping the Mets would pursue. I would’ve perferred Juan Cruz. Ohman ended 2008 with the Atlanta Braves and an ERA of 3.68.

In 83 games he had 53 strikeouts and only allowed three home runs. He walked 22 hitters and a 4-1 record.

The Mets have contacted Ohman’s agent, Page Odle.

I’m impressed with the fact that Ohman held lefties to a .200 batting average last year. If the Mets do sign him, please don’t give him a three-year deal like the one given to Bloweneweis. One year is fine. If it works out, he can be re-signed. If not, they can cut their losses and not have to worry about trading him to a team that’ll want the Mets to pay part of his salary.

I’m surprised that Juan Cruz has remained unsigned for this long. Unfortunately for him, since he is a type A free agent, teams might be reluctant to sign him because they’d rather not lose their top draft pick for a middle reliever.
