Mets Offseason Moves

By / February 16, 2009 / Offseason

Christian over at Mets Merized Online does not seem to think the Madoff scandal and what it did to the Wilpons really did not affect the Mets offseason moves.

I think it did to a certain point. While they did spend, I think more needed to be done in terms of catching and a right-handed bat.

Ramon Castro and Robinson Cancel are not the answer. They really need an upgrade there. While there were few available, the fact they really were limited with money and chose to keep the payroll so low made it impossible.

Clearly the Madoff mess has hit the Mets more than anyone thinks. I cannot think of another reason that Omar would look to trade Ramon Castro. Here’s a guy who’s the top backup catcher in baseball(when healthy) and all of a sudden shortly after the Madoff mess..omar is looking to unload him and make Cancel the backup !?! I’m sorry but cancel’s bat will never come anywhere close to Castro’s. This move makes no sense at all. All it would do is lower the team payroll. Why would the Mets want to lower payroll ? The Madoff mess ! That’s why.

I agree with you Tanya, the Mets were hurt by Madoff mess. The mets do need an upgrade at catcher, I don’t think there are any viable options however. But, one area is corner outfield. The Mets, in my opinion, would have signed Abreu if the Madoff scandal not take place.
