Has Reyes Matured?

By / February 18, 2009 / Spring Training

I have 10 minutes before my computer goes down again. So here goes.

Tonight on a little television program called LoudMouths, one of the many topics was Jose Reyes.

As you all know, Reyes arrived to Spring Training Camp today. Before you have a heart attack over him being late, he had a legit reason. He and his wife welcomed a new child into the world.

Reyes was asked by a reporter how he felt about the whole Mets and Phillies rivalry. His response will shock you. It isn’t the typical Reyes response.

Here’s what he said:

We don’t worry about Philly. I don’t know why they worry so much about the New York Mets. They can talk about whatever they want to, because we worry about us.

They are the one to win the World Series, not us, and we don’t say nothing about them. We just say congratulations to the Phillies.

We focus on them when we play them, but they always seem like they’re talking something about us, and I don’t know why.

YAY! I’m glad Reyes stood up and said it. Instead of just mouthing off right back, he made a statement that I have asked myself time and time again.

The Phillies are the (ew) World Champions. They won the World Series. Why in bloody heck would they even talk about the Mets? It took them 28 years to do it.

Heck! It’s only their second championship is over 100 years of existence. If you ask me, that’s not something to be proud of.

Enjoy your championship and stop worrying about the team two states away…unless you think you have a reason to worry.

I just wanted to point out this new found maturity Reyes has seemed to have found. I’m proud of him. He did what his teammates couldn’t. He didn’t throw out more fighting words.

My message to Philly:

Get over yourselves! We all understand New York is the greatest city. New York will always be superior to you. Just know it and accept it. It would be better that way.

God bless Jose Reyes..It looks like he’s taking the steps that’s needed to become a leader. And you know what !? He’s right with his comments..here you have the Phillies before game 1 of the NLDS vs the Rockies..and instead of showing a video of their comeback of winning the East..they show a video of the Mets collapse to fire up the fans. Then you have the Championship parade last october and instead of only enjoying the World Series title they just won..Jimmy Rollins decides to take a shot at the Mets by saying ”The Mets got Santana but one guy does not win a Championship..25 men win a Championship.” The Phillies and their dopey fans need to stop with the ‘Single White Female’ thing with the Mets..and just enjoy your title. As for Reyes. Keep it up Jose and bring the Mets a ring in 09.

Excellent call on the Single White Female comparison. I know the Mets won’t be talking about the Philthies whenever they win their championship. Jose has come a long way since his incident with Jerry Manuel back in June when he didn’t want to come out of the game.

Thanks Ed..i think i’ll start calling the Phillies and their fans the ‘Single White Female crew’..I bet Phillies and Red Sox fans get along perfectly since both teams fans have the Single White Female thing on New York baseball teams. It’s so sad..but hey it’s not me..mark my words..if the Mets win it all. The Phillies will not be on my mind at all. I’ll be too busy enjoying the 09 title.

Tanya, great job! Thanks for the news. Just an FYI, it took them 28 years to win a championship. They lost in the Series in 93.

Thanks for looking out Nilvio. I didn’t even realize I mistyped the number of years. I only had a 10 minute window to type the blog. I’ll be more careful next time.
