Perez Goes On The DL

By / May 6, 2009 / Injuries

UPDATE 10:45pm:

During Sports Nite, Oliver Perez told reporters that he has been experiencing the pain in his knee since Spring Training. He will be heading to Florida for rehab.

Obviously he isn’t the brightest bulb on the planet because if he was, he would’ve said something about it then. Instead, he decides to whine about it when everyone gets on his case about how he is stinking up the joint.

Omar Minaya announced during the postgame report that Oliver Perez will be placed on the DL.

An MRI on his knee revealed patella tendinitis of the right knee.

Jonathan Niese will be making the start on Friday against the Pirates instead of Ken Takahashi. Niese has been anything but dominant in Triple-A Buffalo going 0-2 with a 6.55 ERA.

So it appears that Perez was not lying. The injury was not in his head.

I’m not happy about Niese coming up. I would’ve preferred to see Nelson Figueroa. At least he can give the Mets five innings.

Let’s see how it works out.

agree rather see Nelson, but if you’re going to Start Niese it’s good to start him vs Pitt.

Is it only me or does Nelson seem like something toxic to the Mets? It’s only when they have no other choice that the Mets call him up. What more can he do to show the Mets that he can help them? I just don’t get it.

I saw Niese’s 8 inning gem last September at Shea. He’s got potential. I think they wanted to save some face by NOT calling up Nelson. I’m working on a doozy of a post on the whole Ollie Perez situation for my blog now. I knew I should have stayed up for the post game show.

Nobody ever denied his potential. I just think, after his last start in Triple-A, that Niese is on his way to really developing his stuff. Bringing him up now could ruin that. I don’t think it should happen.

If the Mets really wanted to save face, they would bring up Nelson. There’s no reason not to, UNLESS they want to bring him up later in the season. He doesn’t have many options left to send him down again.
