Perez Getting Examined

By / August 19, 2009 / Injuries

You have to admit Mets pitcher Oliver Perez is showing some signs of improvement. Although I hate to admit to that because each time someone does say that, he reverts to bad Ollie.

Last night was no different.

After giving up four runs last night, all of which were scored by a three run shot by Matt Diaz and a solo home run by Adam LaRoche, Perez finally earned a win. I should say the Mets finally handed him a win after lousing up two great starts by him. Derek Lowe was the losing pitcher.

Just when it seems Perez might have turned a corner, he might be injured.

During last night’s game, Perez had to cover first base in the fourth inning. In doing so, he aggravated his knee. The very knee that caused him to go on the DL back in May and had Mets fans celebrating.

Cruel! I know!

He is scheduled to have an MRI today which will determine if he makes his next start against the Philadelphia Phillies.

It was because of the Phillies the Mets re-signed Perez, right? How’s that working out for you boys?

Perez is at the bottom of the list for what has gone wrong this season. He has not had a good year, but he is not the reason the mets are missing the playoffs. Injuries to your lead off, three hitter, and clean-up guy is hard to replace. Not to mention losing your 3rd and 4th starting pitchers and your 8th inning man. That is very difficult to over-come. Now, I don’t give anyone a pass. I think manuel has done a poor job of managing this club. I think Shines has done a poor job at third. And the mets have done a poor job at defense and base-running.
