The buzz is Mark McGwire is returning to, not just baseball, but to the St. Louis Cardinals. No, not as a player. He is not Brett Favre or Roger Clemens. Well, maybe Clemens. He may be returning as the new hitting coach.
Tony LaRussa, who is said to have contemplated retirement after his team lost in the first round of the playoffs, is believed to have been the one who made this call.
Hal McRae, the hitting coach of the Cards, was recently fired and is said to be replaced by McGwire. At least, that is how McRae put it in a tweet.
Reports have indicated that McGwire has already worked with several former Cardinal players during the offseason for their hitting, including Matt Holliday and Skip Schumaker.
No formal announcement has been made as of yet. I’m sure they are waiting on the decision of LaRussa returning first to make this official. All indications are he will take the helm again.
Since McGwire’s retirement in 2001, he has been under intense scrutiny for having used steroids. He was their for the Congressional hearings on Capitol Hill. When asked if he used steroids, the only thing he said was he was not there to talk about the past, only the future.
Are the Cardinals choosing to forgive and forget? Or do they just want LaRussa back so badly they do not mind bringing a media circus into their world?
Cardinals fans are said to be the best fans in baseball. How will they react to this announcement? They are choosing to forgive and welcome him back with open arms.
