The Pitching Woes

By / March 15, 2010 / 2010 Season, Spring Training

It is the same story every year. What is the starting rotation going to look like? Outside of Johan Santana, there really is nobody that you can say “He got this’.

This is how I figure the rotation is going to end up looking:

  1. Johan Santana (DUH)
  2. Mike Pelfrey
  3. John Maine (Sigh)
  4. Oliver Perez (Which one I do not know)
  5. Jonathon Niese

Nelson Figueroa is not going to make the cut and neither is Fernando Nieve. I would be shocked if either one did. As it is, Maine is almost guaranteed not to give you five innings. You never know which Perez you are going to get. Niese nobody really knows how far he can go just yet.

As I mention on the Facebook fan page, I like Figgy as the longman reliever. The Mets really do not have that.

The bullpen, to be honest, worries me. It is looking more and more like Jenrry Mejia is starting 2010 as the bridge man to Francisco Rodriguez. People seem to think he is ready for that pressure. Me? Not so much. I would like him in the minors to start the season and then bring him up later.

Perez still seems to have mental problems. If he does not get a call, he gets flustered and loses all control. That is a HUGE problem. We cannot have a pitcher like that. Maine, well that is for the next post.

I understand this is Spring Training. That seems to be everyone’s excuse because Mets fans are great with the excuses. But at some point, these guys need to start showing up. We need to see what it is that we have going into 2010. Quite honestly, I’m not liking what I am seeing too much.

If the season started today, I would be screaming for Omar Minaya to make a trade. No trade is to include Ike Davis though. We are not that desperate.

Tanya, I been saying this for a week now. You are dead on. Figgy and Nieve will not make the big club. Keep in mind that they still have a contract for Beimel out there and Manuel loves the kid Mejia so much, he is ready to name him the savior of Queens. I think he needs time. It would be wiser to have Figgy for long relief and Nieve up too, keeping Mejia in AAA. It won’t happen though. As for a trade, I proposed some suggestions on the daily stache, Luis Castillo can be shipped to Baltimore for pitching, because Brian Roberts is not ready and looks like he won’t be for a while. If they move an Ike Davis, it should be in a blockbuster where we get an Adrian Gonzalez or Joe Mauer, as both of their teams are into trading options right now.
