This is for all of the Mike Piazza lovers out there. You know there are lots of you. He was probably the best Mets catcher. Some will argue Gary Carter. Not in this writer’s eyes.
Piazza was known for so much among Mets fans. To the females he was the hottie of the New York Mets. Every female loved this “Italian cookie”, as one girl described him. To the men it was his hitting abilities. All Mets fans would just stare as baseballs would leave Shea Stadium. I have often wondered how he would do at Citi Field. Mets fans nearly lost their minds when they learned he was a member of the New York Mets back on May 22, 1998.
The most important thing that I think the incomparable number 31 has ever done for the New York Metropolitans, their fans, this city and this nation was hit that 2-run home run against the Atlanta Braves reliever Steve Karsay when baseball resumed, September 21st, just ten days after the events of 9/11/01. He sent everyone into such a euphoric state. As that baseball left the building through left centerfield, it took the tension everyone was feeling right along with it.
It has been considered the most significant moment in Major League Baseball history. Maybe in any sport.
Well Mike Piazza will be a guest on Mets Weekly next Saturday at noon on SNY. Make sure to watch it and if you will miss it, set those DVR’s.
Hmm. I never did get his autograph.
