The Release of Perez Imminent

By / March 20, 2011 / 2011 Season, Spring Training

The first big casualty of the war to be on the 2011 Mets team was Luis Castillo. He was released last week. The next victim appears to be Oliver Perez. It is being reported in the New York Daily News the Mets are set to give Perez his walking papers as early as today after yesterday’s atrocious performance. He gave up back-to-back home runs in true Ollie fashion.

What made this outing the worst walking a lefty. Perez was auditioning for the position left by Pedro Feliciano as the lefty specialist. If he cannot get out a lefty, then he is of no use to this team.

Perez will not get a vote of confidence from pitching coach Dan Warthen, who appears to have saved him from being the first to be gone of the most hated pair of players on the team. Warthen could only say:

We have other guys in here who are working hard and doing a good job from the left side. He’s trying to make the lefthanded job, and these other guys are doing a very good job right now. So we have to evaluate that way.

Manager Terry Collins and GM Sandy Alderson were set to discuss the fate of Perez last night.
