If you think about it, this really does make sense.
The New York Mets are not playing playoff baseball. I think that is firmly established.
So the fans had to deal with the Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves playing. Some fans rooted for their former manager who took the 1986 team to win the holy grail of baseball.
Sorry. Davey Johnson did not make it. I rather remember him from his glory days with the Mets anyway.
Thankfully, the Braves did not make it either.
Fast forward to present day. It is the St. Louis Cardinals vs. the San Francisco Giants. What is a Mets fan to do? Do you root for Carlos Beltran and the redbirds or Angel Pagan and the gints?
Fans are truly torn. When I polled fans on Facebook, I was surprised by the answers. It seems more and more fans have finally forgiven Beltran for all wrong doing in 2006. They are rooting for him and the Cardinals. They understood that he had contributed to the Mets the best he could.
Joey T. had this to say about who he was rooting for:
I’ve hated the Cardinals since the 80’s, so Beltran or no Beltran that team from St.Louis can go kick rocks !!! P.S. Cardinals are pond scum !!!
That is putting it mildly.
However, what caught me by surprise was the reason why some fans are rooting for the San Francisco Giants, who can be considered the mother of the New York Mets.
Here is what Jason Martinez said:
Giants because of my roots before they departed to San Fran. NY Giants will always have a place with me so I root for them silently.
Fellow Mets fan, Jamie Pilloise said:
Beltran…..but I dont like the cards….but I usually root giants cause if they never left NY there would be no mets…
I will be honest, I was rooting for the Giants just because I hated the Cardinals and I had no one else to root for in the National League. Then I really thought about it and it makes complete sense why Mets fans every where should be rooting for the Giants.
We share the same DNA. Both the New York Giants, originally called the New York Gothams, and the New York Metropolitans originated in New York City. The orange of the Mets colors are a tribute to the Giants. If not for the Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers leaving NYC, there would be no New York Mets.
For those of you who are on the fence as to who you should root for in the National League, you go with the team that is closest to your own. Go New York Giants!
