Every girl enjoys jewelry. You know it’s true. So imagine your boyfriend or husband taking you to Tiffany’s or Cartier knowing he had no intention of buying you anything. Gentlemen, go ahead and try that. Let’s see if you don’t get “the look” or silent treatment from her. Doing that is giving her false hope.
Please enter New York Mets front office.
The front office has become the equivalent of a boyfriend doing exactly as I mentioned. During the offseason, Mets fans have been relegated to hearing things like:
— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 7, 2013
The Mets are showing strong interest in former Giants closer Brian Wilson,
The Mets are “very interested” in free agent outfielder Grady Sizemore. –Kevin Burkhardt
Heard the #Mets are very interested in Grady Sizemore. He's coming off microfracture surgery, but I would def take a shot w him.

These are all names that give Mets fans false hope. It’s a tease. For the ladies, it’s like thinking you are going to get that robin egg box with the white satin bow from Tiffany’s and instead end up with a cheap imitation. In this case, a bunch of minor league contracts. Some of you know they will not even make it to the majors this year.
Welcome to the bargain shopping. I would say it is like Black Friday, but then you would have to expect big names on the cheap. Will the big name players please stand up? Nothing! There is my point. GM Sandy Alderson has been shopping at the 99 cents store for players.
Oh wait! There is OF Marlon Byrd. If he still has anything left at the age of 35. There is also LaTroy Hawkins who is now 40 years old. Those are just two names that can scream “DUD!” But of course, the excuse is that the Mets lose nothing because they are minor league contracts. Big surprise! Let’s see if anybody thinks that same thing if they make the team and screw up.
Here is another name that is being associated with the New York Mets: RHP Brandon Lyon. The front office is very interested tanks to the uncertainty of a certain Frank Francisco. Even Sandy Alderson is not sure about the ninth inning:
“…as far as his elbow is concerned, I don’t know that we could have a lot of confidence in where we are. I hope that Frankie [Francisco] is able to step up. We’ve taken a lot of the time to look at other possibilities and ways that we can shore this up.”
Well, at least he is being honest.
Here is my issue, if you know the money is not there, why are you looking? Why would you go to Tiffany’s when all you can afford is Zales or Kay Jewelers?
Even talks of them still being interested in Bourn is enough to make the fan base salivate. Oh the possibilities of having a two-time All-Star and Gold Glove winner in the outfield. You mean to tell me that does not get you the least bit excited of just the thought of it?
Now let’s see if it actually happens or if this is just more false hope. It all rests on giving up a first round draft pick. Would you do it? Could you live with that? Food for thought.
